“Let Me Be As Christ To You”

I received a very exciting announcement this week. One of our 5th graders, Patrice Nguyen was awarded first place in the Character Matters Essay contest sponsored by the University of San Diego! In her essay, she reminds us that "Character matters a lot. Your character is WHO YOU ARE. It is how you think, feel, and act. Having good character also means doing good things to others and showing you care about what's around you." Strength of character is a focus of our School Families program this year and a wonderful resolution for all this new year. Congratulations Patrice!

We look forward to celebrating Catholic Schools Week from Monday, January 25th through Sunday, January 31st. More information will follow next week, but I invite you to put Friday, January 29th on your calendars. We would like to appreciate YOU, our generous parents, with a special treat after mass. Also important: Our Open House will be from 8:30-11:30am on Sunday, the 31st. Students are encouraged to attend the 9am Sunday mass in their dress uniform. We will also be open for several "See Us in Action" dates: 1/21, 2/24, and 3/10 from 9-11am. Please help to spread the word!

Be reminded that the re-registration process continues. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions. If you have a prospective Kindergarten student you must fill out an application and sign up your child for a screening time. Kindergarten screening will take place on Thursday, February 4th. There is a $30.00 screening fee and you must provide proof of age (a copy of either your child's birth certificate or Baptismal certificate). Please contact the office if you have any questions.

Thanks to all who joined Tuesday's Gala planning meeting, and to the many others who are lending their time, talent and resources to our largest fundraiser of the year. The success of this year's Gala is critical to reducing our budget deficit. I encourage you to take a few minutes to visit the new Gala Website, at www.sjagala.org, which makes it easier than ever before to Donate, Sponsor, Underwrite, or Purchase Tickets. If you have not yet signed up to help, you can contact one of the Gala Chairs, Doreen Smillie, Kristian Keeney or Kimberly Caccavo. (Also an excellent way to complete your 30 service hours for this year.)

This Friday, 1/15, we will have a Charger Spirit Day. Students may wear a Charger jersey or shirt (or navy/yellow) to school WITH their uniform pants or skirt. Father Gerard will be celebrating Mass and he has given permission for the jerseys to be worn to church. Please just remind students that they must still be appropriate and look nice. Any additional Charger gear/ornamentation may not be worn until after church. Thank you.

Thank you to Knights of Columbus for their generous donation of funds raised through the community breakfast! We appreciate your support!

I invite the 7th and 8th grade students to join me for "Hot Chocolate with Mrs. Dunn" on Wednesday, January 20th at 7:30am in the daycare room. This is the student version of "Coffee with Kathy" and I am looking for their input and ideas regarding the future of SJA. Your efforts to help them arrive early will be appreciated.

The academy will be closed this Monday, January 18th, in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Please join us for 8:00 Mass this Friday as the 1st grade assists with the Liturgy.

In today's "Why do Catholics do that?" be reminded why we believe that the Pope is head of the Church.
